Unemployment was spreading, AIDS was taking its toll and Nirvana’s singer, at the height of his glory, shoots himself. The Washington Post even ran as a headline: Kurt Cobain, the suicide that spoke to a generation. The tragedy even reinforced the legend surrounding this band adopted by an entire young generation. Nirvana’s popularity hasn’t waned since, with their songs remaining classics of the genre. Shortly after, he was found dead in his home from a bullet to the head, on April 8th, 1994 - seven months after the release of their third and last studio album, In Utero… With this tragic ending at only 27 years old, a career stopped and a myth began for this Ian Curtisof the grunge generation. Ironic for this trio who were there, first and foremost to make noise…īut exhaustion would get the better of Kurt Cobain who, weary of the audience and the media, interrupted the European tour that was taking place. Three albums later, Nirvana still enjoyed the same notoriety, and their inspiration didn’t run dry, as proved by the album Unplugged In New York live, an acoustic version then, that allowed you to taste the deep power of their compositions in stripped-down versions. A triumph that put them at the forefront of the alternative rock scene, and most particularly the grunge scene, highlighting at the same time other formations such as Soundgarden, Alice In Chainsand Pearl Jam. Devoted to this ideology of independence, the members of Nirvana became the most popular anti-rock stars of their time, and through no fault of their own.
